Widely tipped to have been in the Eagles sights back in 2008, Bennell was taken one pick ahead of an Eagles selection in that year. After 57 games at the Demons, he was delisted, and was probably a surprise selection to round out the Eagles' rookie list. A small forward/defender coming off a knee injury, Bennell was a speculative pick to see where he might go at the end of 2012.
A speculative pick however that started to pay off in 2014, with Bennell playing most of the season and providing a good option off the half back line. However in the main 22 at the start of the 2015 season, by seasons end he had been passed by others, and was more likely to appear in the emergencies than on the team sheet. Perhaps likely to finish his career as depth, rather than as a regular player, but has room to improve back to a regular player if he wants to take it.
At the end of 2016 Bennell elected to retire from AFL level football
