There's probably not much doubt that Eric MacKenzie's debut was about a year or so too early; thrown into the deep end in a game at Football Park due to an injury crisis, MacKenzie looked like a deer caught in the headlights.
Since then however, he gained another chance when a spot opened up late in season 2008, and this time MacKenzie took hold of that position and looked like the AFL player he was said to have the potential to be prior to his original drafting. Looking composed and steady on the field, he was thrown a few quite big tasks, and performed them with pretty reasonable composure.
Playing his 100th game at the start of the 2014 season, and getting All-Australian selection that year, it appeared that MacKenzie was on track to be a major player. However an ACL injury at the start of the 2015 season saw MacKenzie miss all of 2015 as a new look Eagles took a run all the way to the Grand Final, and the Eagles gameplan moved on.
MacKenzie played a crucial role in one of the Eagles most famous wins, the after-the-siren-in-extra-time win over Port in the 2017 finals series, where he managed to crash the ball into the point post to stop Port getting any score, but it proved to be almost the last gasp of his career, with further injuries causing him to miss all of the 2018 season before retiring at the end of the year at 147 games. |
