After being a fairly highly touted junior leading up to the 2001 draft (and being a popular tip for the Eagles at pick six), Armstrong surprisingly slipped to Melbourne's 21st pick that year, and after a bright start to his career found it difficult to cement his spot in the Demons line up. At the end of a disappointing 2005 season, Melbourne elected to delist the young West Australian, but his earlier promise was enough to secure an AFL lifeline for 2006 from West Coast with a selection in the rookie draft.
After a promising start to the season at Perth, Armstrong was elevated mid season and made his West Coast debut. While not being a dominant player, he did enough to keep his spot in the side throughout the finals and became a premiership player.
Permanently elevated at the end of 2006, Armstrong struggled to retain his place in 2007, and has slipped behind a few other players in the pecking order for a spot in the team, and despite a bright finish in a overwhelmed team in 2008 Armstrong was delisted. |
