One of the inaugural Eagle players in 1987, John Worsfold is probably the biggest name in the club's history. A talented young midfielder early in his career, he was switched back to a half back flank by Mick Malthouse, then appointed the club's captain at the relatively young age of 24. A tough as nails half back flanker, he, Glen Jakovich, and eventual captain Guy McKenna created a wall across half back that was a key component of the Eagles drive through the 1990s, leading to the club's premierships in 1992 and 1994, the first premierships won by clubs outside of Victoria.
Ongoing injuries and form eventually forced Worsfold into retirement at the end of the 1998 season with 209 games to his credit as a player. After a year in the media, Worsfold switched to Carlton for a couple of seasons as an assistant coach, before applying for the coaches role back at the Eagles vacated by the sacking of Ken Judge at the end of 2001. Worsfold immediately turned the team around, making an unlikely finals appearance in 2002, and building to a Grand Final appearance in 2005. The holy grail of a premiership was achieved in 2006, making Worsfold the only person in the AFL era to both captain and coach the same club to a premiership.
A slump in the club's fortunes from 2008 to 2010 - even resulting in the dreaded spoon - saw Worsfold's stock dive, but an incredible rise from sixteenth to fourth in 2011 saw that stock replenished. A solid fifth in 2012 was OK, but a disaster in 2013 where the club only won three home games on the way to a decidedly unexpected thirteenth place put the pressure right back on Worsfold. Amid calls for him to be sacked, Worsfold elected to resign as coach at the end of the season.
Two time premiership captain, and premiership coach. Winner of the club's Best and Fairest in 1989. Life member, and 490 games as player and coach of the Eagles.
