Always one of West Coast's fringe players, Josh Wooden's forte is as a tagger and hard working defensive player because he does not have the silky skills of his better known teammates.
An indifferent 2003 and a broken collarbone at the beginning of season 2004 seemed to have shut the door on Wooden's AFL career, with the hard working but not overly talented number 13 seemingly on the outer for a spot in the midfield/defensive rotation. Hard work in the WAFL however led to a somewhat surprising recall to the side, and he did not allow the chance to slip, eventually managing to add nine games to his career total.
Unfortunately for Wooden, he was back on the outer in 2005, only playing one game despite fair WAFL form, and in 2006 he only managed to get back into the team for two games. Starting 2007 on 96 career games, his chances of reaching the 100 game milestone disappeared as a string of injuries made it impossible for him to get on the park even for WAFL duties for most of the season, and at the end of the year he elected to retire from AFL football. |
