Mark Seaby is a very talented ruckman who West Coast were perhaps lucky to snare as low in the draft as happened. Seaby was knocking on the door of selection with solid form in 2003, and when Gardiner went down in 2004 the door finally opened for the young West Perth product. Seaby has shown good form as a ruckman, but also has done well as a tall forward, indeed getting a Rising Star nomination for his 2004 game against Hawthorn at York Park.
Seaby is currently understudy to Dean Cox as he has been for a number of years now, and it sometimes shows in his performances; when given the number one ruck role, he usually performs quite acceptably, but as a bit part ruckman - the only role available when a rampant Cox is playing - he struggles with form.
This is likely to be as much due to a lack of game time as anything, and it did result in Seaby requesting a transfer at the end of the 2008 season to get more chances elsewhere, though that fell through and he will continue with the Eagles. His role was probably best summed up by the 2006 Grand Final; while Seaby is a premiership player, his role was mostly to be there in case Cox was injured; for a player of Seaby's potential that's got to be hard (though probably not when you get a premiership medallion!). |
