Rowan Jones has proven over the years to be a quite effective forward, in most seasons being a solid mark (although shocking shot on goal). His hard work and endeavour over a number of seasons was rewarded in 2004 with one of the four vice-captaincies as an honour, a reward well earned when he was one of the Eagles best in a shocking end to 2003.
A shocking 2004 season though saw him relinquish the vice-captaincy, and indeed by 2005 Jones was on the outer at the club, playing WAFL for most of the season at Claremont. To his credit, he performed outstandingly and gained a recall to the team late in the season, only to injure himself in the Preliminary Final and sit out the Grand Final.
The return though was solid, as Jones once again secured a regular spot in the team in 2006, playing nearly every game, and was rewarded with selection in the 2006 winning Grand Final Team; a game in which his most notable contribution was winning a loose ball against four Swans players in the center in the dying seconds of a game won by a single point.
After playing nearly all of the 2007 season Jones elected to retire from AFL football at the relatively young age of 28, however during his final season he managed to pass 150 games for the Eagles and thus gained life membership of the club, a just reward for a player who was the consummate team man throughout his career. |
