After a couple of years as an understudy in the ruck role - tall and ungainly and not quite there, Dean Cox came out of the shadow of Gardiner as the Eagles' main ruckman in 2004, developing a solid around the ground game to complement a great work ethic and some pretty good ruck skills.
In season 2005, Cox moved on from a good solid ruckman who could compete with the AFL's best ruckmen to becoming without doubt the competition's best ruck. Rarely could any ruckman hold their own against Cox, and it was his sublime ruckwork that set the foundations for the superlative work of the midfield throughout the season. Added to this Cox's around the ground work was of the highest quality. At the end of the season Cox was awarded his first All-Australian guernsey as the lead ruck.
Cox's form has since continued on at the highest level, with All-Australian selection again in 2006 and 2007, and he was an integral part of the West Coast winning Grand Final team in 2006, his celebration on the final siren being one of the iconic images of the Eagles third premiership success. A real sign of his ability is his selection as the All-Australian ruckman in 2007 despite an injury interrupted early season; an effort repeated in 2008 where Cox played for much of the season with an injured foot yet won the club championship and yet another All Australian selection - the only Eagle to gain that honour for that season.
After a dire season in 2009 where injury looked to finally be taking its toll on the Eagles big man, Cox played much of 2010 with injuries, making some question how long he could continue. However he returned to the stunning ruck form that had become his hallmark in 2011, earning his fifth AA jumper as a ruckman, and then adding a sixth in 2012 (in the forward pocket, after a season where he added pinch forward to his array of skills).
Dean Cox could easily lay claim to being the prototype for the modern ruckman, and indeed could lay some claim to being the best ruckman to have played the game - certainly he's in the top few. Perhaps next time there's a tunnel built in Perth, it could be the Dean Cox Freeway? |
