2018 Ratings Watch

Postby merovingian on Mon Apr 16, 2018 8:42 pm

I love the AFL Player Ratings a little more than most blokes. So I just want to point out that Shuey, this week, has become just the second Eagle (after Naitanui) to crack the top 10.

We have the regulation 5 players in the top 100 and 10 in the top 200. Kind of screams mid-table. Obviously we need more players on the up trend than down. Click on a player's name to see their personal graph.

Yeo, Darling, LeCras, Barrass and Sheed all up more than 20 places this season. In fact Barrass and Sheed both up 60-odd places. All of our other top 200 players basically holding steady. Masten and Redden have been in decline for years, but even Masten is trending up this year.

NN obviously with an injury-affected ranking. It will be late 2019 before he can accrue enough points to reclaim his rightful place in the top 10.

Sheed, natanui and lycett should jump a fair few spots towards the end of the year

If it screams 'mid table' it is because that is where this group is at in their development. I think we can do a bit better than that, but we're not talking a serious tilt this year. Hopefully we will get sufficient games into young players this year to have a serious tilt next year.

That top 10 is a really good list of players and is about right IMO. I hope JK continues to climb the ladder too.

Latest Eagles top 20.

Barrass, LeCras, Darling, Yeo and Redden all making a move.

NN and JK both collecting decent points in recent games, but they are replacing very high scoring 2016 games with lower scoring 2018 games, hence they're sliding.

Eagles top 5 this season (after 8 rounds):

NN is still warming up, so that's impressive.

Must take into account poor disposal and clangers, as Fyfe isn’t even in the top 15 players.
Why aren’t all these players above him in the ratings ahead of him in the Brownlow odds?

Fyfe is 20th in the overall rankings. But those are calculated over your last 40 games, to a maximum of 2 years ago. Since he missed a lot of footy, his rating is down (doesn't have 40 games in the allowed timeframe).

http://www.afl.com.au/stats/player-rati ... -standings

This season (only 8 games) he's coming 4th, with 18.1 points per game:

There's no Eagles in the top 30 players this season. Naitanui is 32nd (14.2 points per game).

Poor disposal definitely hurts the rating. Turnovers earn negative points, especially if they are the start of a goal scoring chain for the opposition. It's one reason why Gaff's rating is a lot lower than most people would expect for his high possession count.

Latest Eagles top 20:

The main point is probably the gains of McG, Yeo and Redden.

Our top 5 this year (after round 19):

The last 3 columns are matches played, average points per game, and overall ranking. So NN, maligned as he is, is the 9th best player in the entire comp this year (with about 65% game time). Gaff our 5th best player. Neither to participate in the finals - we are screwed, in case you didn't get the memo.

Yeo, Redden and Gaff were our best this year. I believe Yeo should make AA again for sure.
