Round 6 - Western Derby

Postby domo_the_eagle on Sat Apr 21, 2018 9:23 pm

A couple of sore players will need to be managed this week.

Out: hutchings, waterman
In: jetta, petricule (sp)

A 4 tall forward line without the likes of ryan and venebles is too one dimensional. Waterman to make way for speedy gonzales.

Shuey & sheppard will be under clouds all week.

Redden has been a bit meh, he needs to show something.

The blowtorch should really be applied to duggan

Today showed we can't play all those talls up forward. One has to be dropped. He doesn't deserve to as he has had a good start to the season but Waterman should make way.

I really liked Cole's game today and he deserves to hold his spot. I think we need another player who can crumb off the pack up forward as we lacked that today, didn't help that the ball was continually bombed into forward line. If Cole keeps his spot, as much as i like Jetta's rebound from backline i would push him forward for the Derby and keep Cole down back.

At the moment i think Hutchings is showing more then Redden as Redden isnt doing much to hold his spot plus Hutchings generally manages to hit the scoreboard.

If fit i wouldn't mind seeing Ah Chee get given a run in the midfield and up forward.

In: Jetta, Ah Chee
Out: Waterman, Redden

In: Jetta, Petruccelle

Waterman doesn't deserve to be dropped. We want to see the kids play, but we also need to look after and manage them. Give him a week off. It also drops the height of the forward line and gives us some speed.

Not sure what they were doing with Hutchings against Carlton but he was playing as a forward.

AhChee probably needs another game in the WAFL for fitness. The derby is fast and furious we need to run out the game.

Shep has had three knocks in each of the past 3 games 1st qtr. 2 x cork and 1 x goalpost. He just looked like a boxer in the 15th round who was playing on memory. Fabulous all year but may need an injury rest.
Hutchings needs to impact the game if he plays in the middle. Has previously been good as a tagger and after the Fyfe game today we need to tag him. If he plays, he needs to tag.
Freo are quick. Hill, Hill and Walters just to start.

Out - Sheppard (inj), Nelson, Waterman (rest + height reduction)
In - Jetta, Petrucelle and either Mutimer or Partington to play mid/forward.
2017 sponsor of #6 - Elliot Yeo. 2017 B&F, 2017 EFH POTY.

I think we will go Yeo vs Fyfe. Fyfe is too tall and too good in the air for Hutchings.

If they decide not to drop Waterman, then they should use him as a defensive forward on Wilson. That will kill a lot of their rebound, especially the clean disposal out of their backline.

Id like to see petrucelle in venables role. He can kick a goal too.

I agree reddens had ample chances to be that inside bull and so far he has been ok but overall has failed to deliver.

This will be a true indication of where we are at. Freos mids are a class above ours. Do we adopt carltons plan and make it a scrap?

I'm really looking forward to this game. Their midfield is very good, we are probably better than them up in the air. Our forwardline should scare them, we have a lot of height up forward and should stretch their defenders. However they can beat us in the middle, Nicnat MUST play a blinder and make sure he towels up Sandilands. Its not a big ask, Sandi isnt at his best anymore. Im hoping for a quiet week at training to nurse some of these sore players back into condition. Walters needs to be sidelined, we should play Yeo and Shepherd on him all day if Shep is right to go.

Masten and Gaff and Shuey have another opportunity to stand up and show that they belong. They are all good players and quality, just need to see them take control again against Fyfe and co.

Brad Hill and Johnson are likely to return for this game. I think Waterman may be retained. They have Johnson, Pearce, Hamling and Luke Ryan as tall defenders so we will need to match them up. It could become a game of defences as goals will be difficult to come by. Gaff, Shuey and Masten kicking goals could be the difference.

I'm very concerned about this game- since Round 2 Freo have been very consistent and as has been said they are strong exactly where we are weak. They play Optus oval very well, their clearance game is elite, and they have been very good this year at working the ball around and hitting up forwards rather than banging it long. Taberner is a big out, but this will be a major test.

To win we need

-Naitanui and Lycett to play out of their skins, run hard and wear down Sandi over the course of the game.
-Elite midfield pressure and tackling to ensure that even if Fyfe and co win the clearances (and they will) the intercept defenders can get into the game and set up some good slingshot football. And however good the zone is, there needs to be a tight marker on Walters, who is killing it at the moment.
- Kennedy and Darling to bounce back after a poor week, glove marks and kick accurately.

Ins and Outs depend a lot on how people pull up after the Carlton game, but Jetta definitely needs to come in if he's fit and like most people I think Waterman probably needs to go out for balance issues- he can go back to the WAFL having had a solid start to his AFL career.

Freo's defence is underrated this season. They combine very well now, so one thing we absolutely need to wipe from existence is that awful long bombing we were doing yesterday. That starts with getting a little time and space to find a good option.
Down back I would almost prefer Taberner was healthy. He has done a few good things but deep down is still a spud and does not worry me. Him + McCarthy would have been a nice fit for Gov + Barrass to comfortably deal with. I wonder who comes into their team in his place. But anyway it's guys like Walters, Ballantyne & Matera who concern me more. Especially if Shep doesn't get up.

Is Jetta a sure thing to return? He's playing a valuable zone-busting role this season and I think we really missed him yesterday.

Fyfe is having a monster start to the season - just as good, if not better, than in his Brownlow year. He must be stopped.

I also worry about Walters, he's such a dangerous small forward and arguably their best avenue to goal.

We will go into this game as slight favourites but only due to ladder position. I think it will be very very close.

Had to pay $70 for tix in the gods that they reckon are category three. Ah well, the game will be a sell out and the atmosphere should be great.

Yeo needs to run with Fyfe, Sheppard to Walters (if fit otherwise Cole). Nelson to Ballantyne. They have a tall defence (Hamling, Pearce, Johnson, Duman, Ryan) so we can exploit that with Rioli, LeCras and Cripps. If Petruccelle is ready to play, this is the game to bring him in and play him on Wilson and make him accountable.

Our defence should pick up their forwards although we may be a tad tall. Weather conditions may dictate size although it is forecast to be 29c on Sunday.

Neale is the extractor and needs to be quelled. Either we back ourselves to run the other way or we use Hutchings.

This will be a tough game to win. It's a real 50/50 game and will be won/lost in the middle. We need our mids kicking goals. We need to take our chances in front of goal.

Heard shuey was in a moonboot flying back to perth.

Sheps pretty banged up too.
