Tiny Fucking Moths

Postby Eliot Mess on Fri Nov 04, 2016 5:29 pm

Anybody else suffering with this moth plague inside their house?

Several weeks of moths, moths, and moths having sex with moths. They seek to lay eggs in dry goods.
Moth traps only seemed to get them horny. (They work off pheromones.)
We have been hand-catching them, putting some outside, but f'crying out loud, now it's just down to smashing them.

About this time of year the culprit may be the indian (i.e. north american) pantry moth.

If you think this is it....then be aware it's common in Perth and a bugger (expensive) to get rid of.
You need to store all grains and related products (flours, cereals, pasta, polenta, bourghil, couscous, etc) in airtight containers. Note that the sealed bags these things come in can be chewed through by this species so you need a proper plastic storage container.
We bake our own bread and had to throw out kilograms of different (damned expensive) flours because they were infested with the larvae....move the stuff around and look for spidery threads that stick things together.
The larvae can be dormant over the winter months when it's really cold so development from egg to adult can be longer than 6 months.
Once you have the feedstock secured in airtight containers you can buy pantry moth traps in the supermarket...easy to erect and effective at catching the adults.

OR....you could simply invoke the mexican solution and look upon the infestation as just another welcome source of protein..

This is a fantastic post. That's exactly the one. The Indian Pantry Moth, eh?
And yes, they chewed through a plastic bag to get at some ground rice flour.
(They must be able to smell through plastic, which is quite incredible. The world is full of micropores.)

Yes, commonly referred to as "pantry moths" they are a fucker.

They can not only piece plastic, but the maggots can make their way into sealed tupperware. Basically the female uses her prong thingy to lay the eggs either inside the plastic bags, or deep in the seal of tupperware, then when the hatch they crawl the rest of the way in.

To combat them, use the following techniques:
Moth traps, they do help.
Get a bug zapper and leave it on all night.
Make sure everything in your pantry is sealed, then go in at night and spray the fuckers with fly-spray.
If the maggots are free, they will crawl up the walls and cocoon either at your ceiling cornices or under the shelves in your pantry. So spray there with surface-spray.

Leaving a glass of red wine out on a bench overnight works pretty well as a trap too (I'd just use the cheap stuff for the moths though!).

Tried that, but my wife kept drinking it.
