TV Shows you're watching

Postby FXD on Tue Oct 07, 2008 9:03 pm

I thought it would be good to have a thread for everyone's recommendations and critiques on the many and varied television shows out there. I could give much love for some of my favourite TV shows: The Sopranos, The Office, Arrested Development, The West Wing etc but I've lately I've found the most consumate, polished and grandiose epic of American story telling that I think you all should check out: The Wire.

Told over five seasons, The Wire is a sprawling, slow burn drama about the many facets of life in Baltimore. Starting with the police and the drug trade, the show exapnds to the docks, City Hall, the school system and the newsroom which gives the viewer an insight into the working machinations of a city on the edge.

Recently Alan Moore and Keira Knightley have both stated The Wire is the best thing to have come out on TV and I for one concur. I've just started season 5, and I will definitley be finished soon such is the 'can't-put-it-down' factor of the show. One critic has simply dubbed it as 'TV Crack'.

Anyone else got into The Wire? Any other TV shows to recommend?

30 rock is alright too, LB.

I agree Ford, The Wire is a superb show followed by Prison Break and Supernatural.

I should preface this by saying that nothing beats Arrested Development, but I'll deal only in currently running programs :)

Scifi:
1. Lost
2. Battlestar Galactica
3. Torchwood
4. Heroes
5. Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicals (pretty hesitant with this selection. But Summer Glau is my wife to be so...)
Fringe not looking good

Drama
1. Dexter
2. House
3. Weeds (I suppose this is just as much comedy)
4. Skins
Struggling here
Prison Break probably the worst show going around

Comedy
1. South Park
2. The Mighty Boosh
3. The IT Crowd
4. The Office
5. Entourage
Honourable mention goes to Metalocalypse and other AdultSwim productions

Not so much into reality. The Amazing Race is ok, as are some Discovery/Nat Geo docos and build shows.

I agree Nick, Prison Break is, to me, a bunch of arsey tat (sorry Eassam). Mighty Boosh, Entourage are also favourites of mine, as well as Flight of the Conchords. Have you seen British comedy Peep Show? I recommend that if you haven't seen it. Quite acerbic and cringey type humour.

Only just watched season 2 and 3 of Arrested Development but almost couldn't breathe when GOB trotted Franklin out, I was laughing so hard. Genius.

Franklin is amazing! God I love that show, hopefully the movie does eventuate. I know TV shows don't translate well onscreen, but AD is a very different sort of show.

I haven't seen Peep Show, but I definitely heard about it not so long ago. I'll get onto it.

I agree Ford, The Wire is the greatest thing on film. I watched all 5 seasons over the course of this footy season, which was a great distraction from footy.

My all time faves:

1. The Wire
2. Arrested Development
3. The West Wing
4. Six Feet Under
5. South Park
6. Dexter
7. Curb Your Enthusiasm
8. Lost
9. The Mighty Boosh
10. 24
