Round 8 - Gold Coast v Port in China

Postby trade rosa+hansen on Thu Apr 06, 2017 1:20 am

Does anybody have much interest in this game or is anyone planning to go???

I am surprised they made both teams play on the Saturday night in round 7, prior to the round 8 clash on a Sunday daytime game in Shanghai. I assume the ground doesn't have lighting sufficient to play football.

It would have been a better marketing spectacle if they played an overseas game as a stand alone fixture maybe on the Monday night. It would have also given both clubs the extra day to recover from round 7. There isn't a great time zone difference, but a full days travel on the Monday, after doing their recovery Sunday.

I'm guessing the AFL hadn't been to many Chinese sporting events before deciding to do this. Look at the NBA games they have every year in China... the crowd isn't exactly full of enthusiasm... and that's coming from a country that is basketball mad.

This game will have about as much of a crowd atmosphere as a game of chess. It's going to be absolutely hilarious to watch on TV. They might have to do what East Perth did years back at Perth Oval... play crowd cheering music over the loud speakers to make it sound like people care
