Player to Watch 2018

Postby Fat Side on Thu Feb 01, 2018 7:12 am

Which player on our list is the one to watch...the one to have a break out season, or have a huge impact this year?

For mine, it is Malcolm Karpany. He is silky and has all the attributes to succeed, but he needs to get a wriggle on. He has been working hard preseason and right up there with Masten in the time trials. If he had a break out year, our midfield could have a completely different look.

Hard one to answer - you would expect some to show natural improvement & progression e.g. Sheed, Duggan. I like Karpany and look forward to him seeing more time in the 22 this year....there are a few who could have a bigger impact though if they get it right. Rioli & Venables are probably the two players who could come in and have a big impact - both potential game changers.

A number of others who could win over the fans without bringing the same x factor - Ah Chee, Watson, Waterman, Brayshaw if he is not too raw?

Too many players to mention really - but if i had to pick say 4, it would be:

Redden & Sheed - Are they the ready made replacements for Priddis & Mitchell

Cripps & Lecras - There is now some pressure in this forward line for a small/crumbing forward. Both players had average seasons in 2017. Will one or both be replaced by Rioli or Ryan.

I would also like to see a more mobile forwardline, although it is hard to not see Kennedy, Darling and a resting ruckman.

The obvious one would be Venables. Been in the system but never played due injury. Lots of spaces in the middle available so if fit should have opportunity.

Redden, when given games without Priddis, just looked comfortable. Not young but could well come back to the level he had in his best Brisbane year.

Happy to see Sheed, Venables, Karpany, Redden as part of the midfield rotation.

A forward line with JK, JD and Waterman as the third/mobile tall and Rioli and Ryan as crumbers may be the near future with two young talls we picked up a year down track.

Have been waiting for Sheed to take his game to another level - will be very satisfied if this is the year.

Given more time in the middle and on the inside of the pack, I'm hopeful he will shine

Luke Shuey for mine, he has another level and will go to it this year. He will also push for the Brownlow i reckon.

Revisit that after he gets delisted at the end of the season?

Yep. He's been disappointing despite the injury. He didn't get the wriggle on that he needed.

Not getting in best players of reserves, but only 2nd game back

I guess he sees Rioli and Ryan, plus the likes of Petrucelle ahead of him (way ahead in the case of Willie).

Others playing EP reserves:

Olango - fair enough, project player.
Bayok - another project player, but probably needs to move quicker
Burrows - must admit I dont know much about him. Has kicked a goal here and there for reserves, but again not setting the world on fire.

As an aside, delisting Gorter looks the right move. Dropped to reserves and not doing a heap.

Bayok takes up an additional slot on our list (Cat B Rookie). If he has the capacity to play at the highest level in the future he should be persevered with.

I was certainly wrong about cripps and lecca. Both deserving best 22.

Leccas form suggests he can go another year.
