Is it correct that Redden and Yeo are best mates? Given Yeo was a Freo supporter and wanted to go there, maybe we had to commit to Redden to get Yeo?

Just a thought..

Few years a part in the trades, so think its more coincidence than plan. If they had come in the same year then maybe but Redden came over 2 years later, mostly likely because Yeo was his mate and put in a good word, not a case of we picked up redden because Yeo wouldn't come over without him.

Good question BB!

I suspect it is more mental than physical fitness - but also that I believe that mental, physical and emotional is all part of one holistic approach to sport and life.

Reality is - we have folded so many times that any group of players - even second-bottom Carlton, away from home, at windswept Subiaco Oval, in front of a parochial WA crowd, six goals down in the third ("premiership") quarter, facing the best power forward in the comp - think they can win. So they get a sweep of committed energy and hit the front before 3/4 time. Collingwood, St Kilda in Melbourne should have been dead and buried, but they weren't.

So you add the nagging doubt in our own players' guts to the lifting confidence in the opponents, add in a somewhat predictable game plan and only a few key players to stop (tag Shuey, double-team Kennedy, don't kick looping balls into the F50 for Gov & Barrass to pick off) = WCE are relatively easy to overcome.

That is exactly what it is. The dreadful state of the list at the moment has been caused by-

- a relatively settled 22 for the last few years and conservative selection policy meaning little development opportunities for kids and slow turnover of those players.

- an extremely heavy focus on trading for established players rather than drafting and internal development (think Hill, Ellis, Bennell, Wellingham, Yeo, Redden, Jetta, Mitchell and Petrie all of whom have featured heavily in the 22 from their first day at the club)

- A few seriously good game winners (Naitanui, McGovern, Yeo, Kennedy) papering over cracks in the rest of the list and falsely inflating our position each season and creating an unrealistic perception of what the rest of the list is capable of achieving.

Put those together and you have a recipe for a very stagnant, old and mediocre team to develop over time.

Of all the things which have been most frustrating about the last month of football, it is that Collingwood, Brisbane, St Kilda and Carlton, all of whom who looked to have our measure at times in contested football and clearances, are far younger, and much further along in development than us. When the penny finally drops and the rebuild starts in earnest, we are going to be several years behind all of them. Amazingly bad decisions this year have put us at 12:05AM on the premiership clock.

I don't take the 'oldest team' thing too seriously. We became the oldest team after the recruitment of two 34 year olds last year. With Mitchell & Priddis (and probably) Butler & Petrie (and possibly) Giles & LeCras we will be way back in the pack in terms of age without losing the core of our team.

The core of our team is between 25-30 which is very reasonable.

Same here man, that 15GF loss was just plain embarrassing for this club, too many players shat the bed. The same players went missing in the 16EF.

It's like the players got a slight taste of ultimate success and decided its too damn hard to put the grind in to get there again.

The 2015 GF was exceptionally disappointing, but remember the perennial finalists, Sydney, we belted by more in 2014. They were physically intimidated and, like us were never in the game.

Yes .
Like a lopsided 13 to 3 free kick count at half time .
They were never allowed to be in the game .
? Another contrived result for the "underdog" Victorian side .

Came across this interesting stat:
https://afltables.com/afl/seas/2017sr.html#tb

In the total time we have played this year we have lead for 63.47% of the time. Second only to Adelaide's 64.82%.

We have also spent 31.11% behind, the lowest in the comp. Adelaide is 31.89%.

Based on that, if we had been able to hold our crap together and run out games we would be top 2 and fighting for a flag.

Yep teams have been able to lift and we havent been able to go with them OR we fade and they run over the top of us.
