Good example of that was Barrass's kick to Mitchell which Stringer intercepted and kicked a goal from. In the first 3 quarters Barrass wouldnt of done that.

Yep trying to run the clock down 10mins left to go isnt a good idea. Its a mindset thing. Its not just us, plenty of other teams have coughed up junk time goals. Essendon, richmond, freo come off the top of my head.

If the team has been coached to kill the game then that's not such a bad idea. Think Eagles v Sydney 2005-06 or the Eagles under Malthouse; these could be very dower teams. It requires a particular style of play and coaching that kills ball movement at every opportunity, never taking any risks, kick down the line, tackle and congest; reset and repeat. I don't see the currant team being wise in this style.

Not to say they can't play congested footy, just that they make more mistakes that above mentioned teams would have. It also takes a lot of skills.

I would be the last to argue that any of our 92, 94 and 06 lack skills. But your comments undersell the Hawks, Clarkson and their ability to beat the contested game you fondly speak of. It was the Hawks and their skills, particularly by foot, that changed the modern game, imo, away from the style favored by Malthouse, Roos and Woosha.

Fair point and I tend to agree it would currently be hard to play an entire game of this style of footy - especially without a highly skilled team - nor would I advocate we revert to this style; however there are certain basics about it that at times would always be handy for any team to be capable of deploying.

Over time I have also seen game styles come in and out of fashion so I definitely think we will see some cleaver coach tweak and reinvent it in the future. Earlier this year the tagger was a thing of the past not suited to the current style of footy... Collingwood 2010 game plan was basically Eagles 1994 game plan yet so much had changed in modern footy in the 16 years in-between.

I really dislike the Sunday afternoon timeslot.

A few selection headaches this week, first time in a while.

Petrie for Vardy/Lycett?
Hurn for Wellingham
Kennedy for Emac/Barrass?
Emac or Barrass to make way for Gov returning to defense?
Does Priddis come straight back into the team?
Does Lecras and/or Hill come straight back in the team? at the expense of who?
Masten for Partington?
Will Partington get a run? i read that the coaches want him to improve on his defensive aspects of the game. This could be a reason for his continual snub at selection.
Has nelson recovered to replace Butler, and if not who else can replace him?
