This game highlighted a few things:

1) Vardy isn't the answer in the ruck. McInnes offered a lot more today.

2) Francis Watson has some serious potential. Looked great down back but that evasiveness could be useful further up the ground.

3) Mackenzie is done

4) Our second-string midfield brigade is still rubbish

5) Tom Lamb competed well and showed some athleticism - could provide some X factor when our forward line is back and we have some A-grade midfield delivery

6) I thought Gorter held up OK down back for someone in their first hitout

Our kids are just that kids...

5 goals for the game is a poor effort from the team

It was very much the B team. None of our forwards, none of our frontline mids.

Wellingham played well, hopefully this will be an "up" year for him. Sheeds also looked good.
Watson good for a rookie.

One thing we certainly learnt was that GWS have an endless stream of talent.

Positives
Jetta looked fit and could get to contests... couldn't do that last year.
Watson has the IT factor. Skilful and classy.
Waterman looked like he could take a grab... lots of puppy fat though to lose.
Karpeney looked good too. More Ashton Hams than Phil Matera but could get some games this year.

Negatives
Eric MacKenzie... oh Eric. I've backed you in... but that was not a good start.
Vardy - I expected him to be more mobile. Kind of too small to be a ruckman and doesn't look mobile enough to be a forward.
Masten - Another one I backed in... but as a senior player I expected more. Seems to always be falling and losing his feet. He could struggle to be in the team by the end of the season if he keeps playing like that.

Well he is out of contract this year, that's when he tends to play a little better.

I guess being the first game of the year, players are rusty but I thought wellingham made a couple of fumbles. I wasn't overly impressed. Surely one of the younger players will overtake masten this year. Jetta - that's what we all want to see.

Good to see Watson get a decent write up in the paper today.

Want to see more of him this preseason- he looks like the kind of agile, quick midsized player who the Dogs loaded up with last year.

His foot skills are elite. Looking forward to seeing more of him too.

Watson is having an excellent game in defence, getting a lot of it and gaining a lot of metres when he does- will certainly be seeing more of him this preseason.

How good was he? Watson showed poise, class. I want to see heaps more of him. Jet for sure.

I thought our kids were great, I expected a 10 goal flogging easily considering the opposition. Masten is a worry. Wellingham had a heap of the ball but his kicking let him down on occasion. Can't fault the work ethic from our team. I was pleased.

I didn't look at the opposition in any great detail, but from our pov we might as well have sent the boys our in Royal Blue & Black. Collectively they will play a lot more games for the Royals this season.

Yes. A few things.
Some of our depth has potential.
The GWS depth is scary. Shows what ridiculous draft, academy and salary concessions can give you.

They picked up some older players in their last year or so and it has generally worked for them. The selection of Steve Johnson was probably seen as a serious risk, but it has been a success. I reckon GWS would have beaten WB had Johnson been playing. Is the selection of Mitchell and Petrie playing copycat?

I am really excited about this year. GWS and WB will be hard to stop, but we have the experience, the bigger bodies and if we stay focused, we can go all the way. Our issue in the 2015 GF and the 2016 EF were psychological. We need to switch on and stop the complacency.

This year is no different with them having 4 Academy players that will be in the top 40

Jarrod Brander a 195cm Key Forward is touted as the #1 pick along with Charlie Spargo rated in the Top 5.

The only thing which gives me any hope for the league is in a free agent market, plenty of GWS's talent will walk for more opportunities elsewhere.

That said, it is terrifying how good they will be over the next few years. They are a top 4 team which based on their youth can expect to solidly improve each year for the next 4-5 years. They will be a contender and possibly premiers this year, and then take the next step and be utterly unbeatable until 2020.
