Yep - Petrie is a stop gap solution...a last resort in the ruck and up forward should the worst happen.

I think better to have a 300+ gamer in a final rather than a beanpole rookie.

Or the disaster that was Mitch Brown! Petrie would have been a much better option for last years final.

I agree with your point, but I don't think it would have made a scrap of difference to the result. We were smashed.

Yep, it was shambolic. On the upside it seems that the players have come in with a different mindset this year, realise it just wont fall into place.

I'm glad we got Petrie and Vardy - need 4 talls on the list who can play ruck if we want to contend. As has been said (may times) we need a specialist ruckman, and a ruck/forward in most games - Vardy and Petrie are the latter and we rely on Lycett and Giles as a specialist ruckman.

On a separate note, sounds like a number of the AFL listed players in East Perth played well:
- Redden got 39 disposals
- Schofield played well
- Francis Watson got 31 touches
- Giles played in the ruck and didn't get injured - an achievement

http://www.westcoasteagles.com.au/news/2017-03-13/redden-impresses-for-royals

Anyone see the game and can comment on what Watson was doing? He was very impressive against GWS as well

No real mention of Duggan, Partington and some of the other mids in the write up - hopefully they are stepping up as we need them to

49 hitouts to Giles makes the first ruck decision pretty easy for round 1.

The only observation I would make is that if there is one game you should name Petrie in this season rd 1 would be it. He will be desperate to stick it up North and will play out of his skin against them.

Any word on Lycett's injury? No doubt he has had scans already.

Had scans, only confirmed no bone damage. Nothing yet if he requires surgery or if its just a waiting game.

Anyone else laughing at Travis King? Barrass to miss round 1. I doubt it.

It seems MacKenzie has done a lot toward a recall, but whether he can force out Barrass or Schofield will be interesting. I'd expect two of them to play rather than Nelson.

I'd also think Giles rather than Petrie.

Exactly my thinking.

Giles just needed recovery time but did what he had to in the EP warm-up. Unless injured is first choice ruck. Vardy is a forward talent who can ruck a bit and Petrie is the 'we're desperate and have nothing left' option.
Love McKenzie but Barass was an absolute revelation last year and again, unless injured, should play.

I reckon the scene is set for a top four finish and genuine crack at a flag. One of the best and smartest off-seasons we've had in years. Great acquisitions across a range of roles while the seeming revival of a few underperformers like Jetta, Redden, McKenzie, Sheed and Duggan all bodes well. Love the acquisition of those two grand old stagers for one final crack, particularly Mitchell who could win our best and fairest in a midfield role. A hopefully improved midfield with seriously complement our already solid defence and powerful forward line.
However strong or fast or skilled a knight is there are others who can match him. A man will win one tournament and fall quickly in the next. A slick spot on the grass may mean defeat, or what you had for supper the last night. A change in the wind may mean victory.

we have the best forwardline in the competition, one of the best defences in the comp.

Mitchell in the middle only enhances the midfield.

I'm quietly confident

Not good news not only for Lycett... but Jake Waterman "stress reaction" in his foot and is out for 8-10 weeks. The Waterman family must be cursed

Dreadful to be going into rd 1 with your first and second choice ruckman both unavailable for at least the first half of the season. Particularly given the rule change.

Just have to hope for the best with Giles and Vardy and pray our big man stocks don't take any further hits.

This is why we recruited depth and retained players that can play a role. Opportunities for others. A couple of rookie elevation opportunities. Hopefully our top players are back towards the back end of the season.
