I personally would have thought a midfielder would be the best person for a midfield coaching job. I dunno... but isn't a ruckman 99.9% of the time looking up in the air at the ball as it's coming down and wrestling and jostling for position. Hardly in the best position to watch how midfielders go about spacing and trying to get possession.

Coxy may have played for all these years as a ruckman... but Joe Blow in row 143 has probably watched more midfielders off ball work than Cox would have... I would have thought. Ruck coach I can understand... but sceptical about midfield coaching.

On the other hand, I expect that Cox has rewatched more football than any Joe Blow in row 143. He'd have watched every game he ever played as part of his weekly reviews, and most likely a majority of other matches during his playing career and coaching career.

I very much doubt that all Cox would know about the midfield is what he saw while rucking.

Haven't see anything announced from the club.
Maybe they are waiting for the JWM night.

It's hard to know who's responsible for what, when you have a midfield coach, then a separate stoppages coach.
All I know is that we did better with Pyke.

The West Coast Eagles has elevated Jaymie Graham to the role of forward line coach of the senior squad today.

Graham, who was this year senior coach at East Perth and led the Royals into the finals, is a key element of a coaching re-structure that sees Justin Longmuir also promoted to the role of senior assistant coach.

The re-structure began when midfield coach Brady Rawlings moved into the role of List Manager several weeks ago, having served on the coaching panel for three years.

“I am delighted to get the opportunity as forwards coach,” Graham said.

face palm = AAHHHhhhh!!!!!!!!

At least we finally will get a new forwards coach! I'm a Jaymie Graham fan; hopefully he can coach forwards.

I've been suspecting for a while that being a nice guy is more important for today's coaches than being able to coach well. Lame tactics are A'OK as long you keep the players happy. Cutting edge tactics types who might upset people; need not apply.

Seems to be yet another case of somebody being no good at their job, promoted to get them out of the way.

As for Graham. Really great bloke, but can he coach?
Considering the talent they have, East Perth were woeful this year.

Or being an old teammate of Simmo's.

Firstly, "Growing our own people" sounds like genetic experiments.
I'm concerned about it being turned to wrong purposes.

Secondly, is it wise to make Adam S. "Head" Coach for the youngsters?

So to me and for the record our complete coaching lineup for 2017 up looks like this:

Senior Coach: Adam Simpson
Senior Assistant Coach: Justin Longmuir
Forwards Coach: Jaymie Graham
Midfield Coach (joint): Adrian Hickmott
Midfield Coach (joint): Dean Cox
Backs and Team Defence Coach: Daniel Pratt

Tactics and Game plan: ?
Rucks and stoppages: ?

Head of Development: Gavin Bell
Head Coach of East Perth (Development Coach – Forwards): Luke Webster
Development Coach – Midfield: Luke Dwyer
Development Coach – Backs: Mark Nicoski
Head Coach of the Eagles’ Next Generation Academy (both administrative and coaching duties): Adam Selwood

Eagles General Manager of Football: Craig Vozzo
___________________

Looks like’s we don’t need a specialist Tactics and Strategies coach but apparently Justin Longmuir is going to help with strategies which makes me think we are stuffed. Unless he can do an amazingly better job than he demonstrated as a forwards coach!

Also there’s no Rucks and Stoppages coach. Does this mean that Cox and Hickmott both take on this role or Cox continues? Or we draft someone who can play for East Perth and fill this role?

Edits welcome.

No, unfortunately "Growing our own people" is pretty much a hallmark of entrenched institutional incompetence.

A truly great leader can thrive in a business he knows nothing about, by choosing the correct managers to work for him.
In contrast, the worst leaders are those who hire underlings to reflect their own incompetence rather than correct it.

"Growing your own" is a tried and tested method of ensuring that your supremacy is never challenged. You hire people who know nothing, teach them from your own stores of ignorance, them promote them. Thus ensuring you remain surrounded by sycophants whose idea of "thinking outside the box" is having a latte instead of a cappuccino.

Simmo did an outstanding job in 2015. That would have gained him prestige and should have allowed the club to surround him with the best assistants they could find. Instead they have nobbled him with a bunch of muppets.

If there was every any doubt, our most critically important assistant (ie the midfield coach) comes out and admits he never actually wanted to be a coach.

Unfortunately the entire industry is completely mired in this "jobs for the boys" mentality. This idea that "good player = good coach" is like a cancer of stupidity.

Great to see Adam Selwood and Mark Nicoski involved in the development side of the coaching. I would have thought that Dean Cox would have been installed as "Rucks and stoppages" coach before getting a job as "midfield coach" however.
